This Milgauss is in excellent condition and has passed our in-house due diligence and inspection criteria.
The Rolex Milgauss was born out of a need to help scientists and other professionals who were faced with a serious problem.
When the strength of a magnetic field reached between 50 and 100 gauss, standard wristwatches would start acting up, no longer displaying the time correctly. The Rolex Milgauss was created to overcome this particular issue and the first generation was introduced in the 1950’s.
The watch was tested by CERN, the European organisation for particle physics and they concluded that the Milgauss was capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1000 gauss. In fact, the name is derived from the Latin word for thousand – “mille” and “gauss”, the unit used to measure magnetic fields.
The original Milgauss was in production from 1956 until 1988 and then re-launched by Rolex in the current design form in 2007, sporting the option of three different colour dials: black, blue and white but all featuring the original orange ‘lightning bolt’ second hand.
The watch case itself is thicker than a Submariner’s and is waterproof down to a depth of 100 metres. The white dial model comes with a clear sapphire glass but the black and blue dial versions come with a green tint and are known as the GV ‘Grande Verde’ Milgauss models.
The modern Milgauss has a shield around the Calibre 3131 movement made in a unique aluminium alloy and is engraved with a ‘B’ and an arrow, the symbol for magnetic flex density.
