The Rolex Explorer is yet another proper 'tool watch' which was introduced in 1953 and created on the back of Sir Edmund Hillary's conquest of Mount Everest. Even though the hero didn't specifically wear an 'Explorer' he did however wear a Rolex Oyster and the company saw fit to celebrate his association with Rolex by creating the watch we know as the Explorer.
The Explorer I was engineered to withstand both magnetic impact and severe temperature changes making it both tough and functional for those adventurous types.
The Explorer II was launched in 1971 and came with a GMT hand which served a useful purpose by allowing the wearer to know whether it was 5 am or 5 pm in whatever remote location they found themselves.
In 2011 the 40th anniversary of the Explorer II was marked by noticeable updates which included a bigger 42mm watchcase, a new 3137 calibre movement and an updated Oyster bracelet which offered better adjustment.
Apart from those changes the Explorer II still retains the classic fixed steel bezel with 24 hour markers of the original and in many ways still represents the no-nonsense approach of Rolex to designing a watch that is built to carry out a specific job.
