How different things might have been. Back in the 1960's Rolex had a plan to update and modernise the dependable Submariner. They even produced a couple of prototypes (which looked like the early Daytona) but fortunately, for the Submariner at least, the concept was shelved until the 1990's when a clever marketing bod at Rolex came up with an idea for a luxury version of the Submariner. Enter the Yacht-Master.

Sharing the same 3135 movement and case size as the diver-specific Submariner the new Yacht-Master would be aimed more at appealing to the captain of a luxury yacht with its premium choice of platinum or Everose gold finishes and coloured dial options.

It is easy to see the appeal of the Yacht-Master especially if you prefer a watch design that offers a more luxurious look than the very capable but utilitarian Submariner.

So successful was the new watch design that Rolex decided to introduce the Yacht-Master II in 2007. This new addition to the range was increased in size to 44mm and was quite complex with its multi-function chronograph capabilities which would appeal to the regatta and yacht-racing community. It is also considerably more expensive the original Yacht-Master 40.
