Whilst the watch-buying world has been focusing attention on the popular 'tool watches' from Rolex and with prices of certain models doubling over the past year or so, the classic Datejust maintains a steady beat as an all-rounder with serious credentials and, for the time-being at least, an affordable route to owning a Rolex timepiece.

With a history of over 75 years the Datejust has kept to a familiar package of stylish, contemporary looks and dependable movements in a watch that can be both worn on the beach during the day or later in the evening in a swanky restaurant.

Over the years the Datejust has been offered with a variety of case sizes, dial finishes and bracelet combinations to make it the most versatile watch ever to come out of Rolex.

Because of the Datejust's popularity since its launch in 1945 there is a huge choice of variations on offer and prices will reflect the desirability of a particular model.

Our in-house favourite is the 36mm 116233 produced from 2005 and replaced by the 126233 in 2017.  The Datejust was never described as a 'tool watch' for obvious reasons but despite its classic looks this watch uses the same 3135 movement, Twinlock crown, scratch-proof sapphire crystal, 'Cyclops' lens and COSC credentials found in the Submariner of the same period.

The non-hole case of the 116233 is slightly 'fuller' than the previous 16233 and is presented with broader polished lugs. However, it is the Jubilee bracelet of this model with its hidden clasp plus solid side, centre and end links which gives it top trumps for us.

The design of the Rolex Jubilee bracelet in itself is a piece of clever engineering but the inclusion of a hidden clasp design is not only aesthetically very pleasing but supremely comfortable on the wrist too.

Prices for the 116233 are remaining sensible for now and the bi-metal yellow Rolesor models offer excellent value for money these days. The choice of variants means there is a Datejust for just about everybody and presents an opportunity to own a Rolex without breaking the bank.
